The three-way housing, lifting impeller, motor bearing, and motor make up the majority of the structure. This pump has an axial flow impeller with a sliding construction. When the oil pump is turned off, gravity causes the impeller to be at the bottom of the rotor. When the pump is turned on, the lift produced by the rotating impeller causes the impeller to move along the rotor to the top.
